SDPCA is pleased to announce that Dr. Dan Spencer was appointed after a competitive process to the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District Hearing Board.

The duties of the Hearing Board include consideration of variance requests from permitted entities, permit appeals from permittees or members of the public, and requests for abatement orders.

This volunteer public health position is important in addressing air pollution. Having a well respected and established pediatrician to represent the health needs of children is important. SDPCA would like to thank Dr. Dan Spencer for volunteering his time and energy to this position. SDPCA would also like to thank our many friends who co-signed the two letters of support that our community wrote in support of Dr. Dan Spencer. A meaningful excerpt from our letter,

Dr. Dan Spencer is a well-known and well-respected member of San Diego’s pediatric community.  He has been a partner physician within the Southern California Permanente Medical Group, which is Kaiser’s physician group, for over 15 years.  He takes care of children both as a primary care provider in the East County, as well as the lead physician of Kaiser San Diego’s Pediatric Urgent Care Group that encompasses the entire county.  In addition to being a front-line pediatrician who takes care of urgent pediatric respiratory issues, he is also a long-time leader in pediatric quality metrics and leads our pediatric asthma team.  He is an experienced clinician and departmental leader, and we are lucky to have him as part of SDPCA.

But most importantly regarding Dan Spencer, he represents us.  He carries the collective voice of all the pediatricians he mentors and works with.  His entire Pediatric Urgent Care team also volunteered to endorse his candidacy which demonstrates the respect he carries among his colleagues.  Some of their signatures are below (we could not include everyone).  He is a practical person who understands communities, people and he certainly understands pediatric asthma and air pollution.  His extended family operates small businesses (not related to any air issues) so he understands the balance and practicality one must bring to decisions.  He was one of our original members of SDPCA and worked tirelessly to help get our organization started and going.  We think he will be a more than capable physician member of the hearing committee helping to build a better San Diego for everyone, including our collective children.

Congratulations to our friend and colleague Dr. Dan Spencer.
