A solid climate win for our group here in San Diego. San Diego Pediatricians for Clean Air is young, but we quickly got to know Sandy Naranjo a Latina Environmental Activists who is a leader from Mothers Out Front. She ran for Port Commissioner as a representative from National City, one of the most polluted and disenfranchised communities in our area, and an area where many of our pediatric asthma patients live. There is a huge pediatric asthma burden there. She is a resident of the area, and a progressive latina and now the youngest port commissioner ever elected. She WON!!! Our group supported her candidacy and put out a statement. We were invited to her inauguration as a Port Commissioner, and she is going to work for maritime clean air and for economic redevelopment of the waterfront that will work for environmental justice communities.
